Not all tops are alike. There has been an unprecedented escalation in convertible top sales on the internet. While a consumer whose knowledge is limited to, "this top cost less than that one", will readily purchase the cheaper top thinking they will save money, that choice is wrong. Most of the internet discounted tops are "knock offs." Regardless of their warranty claims, when you receive your top there is no written warranty. There is a reason for this... substandard construction. As with all "knock offs," these companies utilize thinner materials, off shore labor and substandard assembly procedures. They will always fail early and good luck on a warranty claim. I'm not saying that I will not install a top purchased by a customer online. I WILL install your customer provided top, BUT the labor will be Higher as it takes longer to get a good fit, and I will not provide a labor warranty due to the substandard composition of these tops. In most cases you will end up paying almost as much for your cheap top getting it professionally installed, than as if you had just gone with a high quality top system, with a full written warranty.
For example, a customer brought me a top for a BMW 318i that he paid $400 for online. The top calls for 8 hours labor to install at $80 and hour. Due to the fit of the top, it required an additional 4 hours to install. The customer paid out for top and installation a total of $ 1,360.00. If he had purchased the High Quality Electron Top from me at $900, he would also have received the lower labor cost of $65 per hour for 8 hours. His total cost would have been $1,420.00 for a High Quality Warranted Top that exceeds Original equipment specifications. For less than $65 the customer would have had no worries. Less than a year later the cheap top came apart at the seams!
